The first cup is the quiet one.
A washed Colombian for the hour before the day gets its hands on you.
Red apple, panela, a long clean finish. Roasted in the UK to order and posted through the letterbox, so it is on the counter when you come down. Grind it while the kettle runs. Drink it before the phone.
Inside every bag there is a card. One of the twenty-two laws, printed on thick stock, yours to keep or pass on. The coffee is the point. The card is the gift.

of Growth & Freedom
Twenty-two patterns, found in the lives of people who had to earn their ground. Read them slowly. Come back to one.
A man does not rise in one heroic moment. He rises by returning to the work after comfort, failure, resentment, fear, and distraction have all invited him to stop.
One slow, painful brick at a time.
In life, everything meaningful is earned.

The Foundation
Washed Colombian. Red apple, panela, a long clean finish.
The first coffee in the range. A clean washed lot from Huila, roasted light to medium for clarity rather than weight, so it is as good black at six in the morning as it is with milk at ten. Roasted in the UK the week it ships, posted flat through the letterbox.

Dolph Lundgren · Actor
Stop talking, and start listening to yourself.
Before his comeback he felt like quitting films every day. Dolph Lundgren went to therapy, learned to meditate, and still trains hard, minus the ego.
Asked what meditation does for him:
Clear space, to focus on anything. To focus on removing obstacles that might be gathering in mind, to focus on a project; perhaps just to prepare myself for a workout the next day. I don’t like people making excuses – there should be no excuses when it comes to getting the job done, but I do totally understand it when people struggle to start; and that’s what meditation gives me, often – the clarity to start. [...] When I first got into meditation I wasn’t quite sure, but now I couldn’t imagine going a day without it. I wouldn’t be the same person now if I didn’t meditate. It’s cleansing for the mind, it really is.
Asked whether he has had demons to overcome:
Well, I had a pretty difficult period leading up to my comeback in the mainstream movies with The Expendables. My father passed away in 2000 and although we had a pretty difficult relationship when I was growing up, I stayed with him when he was very ill. [...] My partner, Jenny, made sure I went to therapy and that’s where I really felt some of the meditation having its effect. I felt like quitting the movie industry every day, before that, and I took a step back from it to make sure that I sorted my own life out for real, instead of playing characters who were troubled in films.
Asked for the biggest lesson of that time:
It is interesting – a lot of the time I talk about mental strength, but to give advice you have to take your own advice, and that is more difficult than it seems, sometimes. Finally I realised I needed to stop talking and to start listening – to myself – and from that day everything got easier.
