RSNG Coffee No. 01, The Foundation: a dark matt pouch with an ember number and a tasting line.
RSNG Coffee · No. 01

The first cup is the quiet one.

A washed Colombian for the hour before the day gets its hands on you.

Red apple, panela, a long clean finish. Roasted in the UK to order and posted through the letterbox, so it is on the counter when you come down. Grind it while the kettle runs. Drink it before the phone.

Inside every bag there is a card. One of the twenty-two laws, printed on thick stock, yours to keep or pass on. The coffee is the point. The card is the gift.

250 g · Huila, Colombia · Washed · Whole bean or ground

    The 22 Laws
    of Growth & Freedom

Twenty-two patterns, found in the lives of people who had to earn their ground. Read them slowly. Come back to one.

A man does not rise in one heroic moment. He rises by returning to the work after comfort, failure, resentment, fear, and distraction have all invited him to stop.

One slow, painful brick at a time.

    The Foundation

Washed Colombian. Red apple, panela, a long clean finish.

The first coffee in the range. A clean washed lot from Huila, roasted light to medium for clarity rather than weight, so it is as good black at six in the morning as it is with milk at ten. Roasted in the UK the week it ships, posted flat through the letterbox.

    A card in every bag

Thick uncoated card, one colour, one of the twenty-two laws on the front and the whole of it on the back. It comes stapled to the back of the bag and tears off clean. Keep it on the fridge. Give it to someone who needs it.

    Dwayne Johnson · Actor

Every rep is a conversation with yourself. So is every craving.

Six small meals a day, steak and rice, and a bench press that works like meditation. Dwayne Johnson on listening to the body and talking himself out of temptation.

Asked whether past disappointments still trouble him:

Am I strong enough to screen out all the bad stuff? No, I’d say I’m not. You know, you don’t want to pretend stuff didn’t happen in the past because that’s no good either. It’s your past that defines you but it’s your future that makes you.

Asked what he means by checks and adjustments in training:

Think about it. When you are bench pressing, you are listening to your body on every fraction that you push, every millimetre. As your arms straighten, your brain is in overdrive – it is assessing, responding, checking. [...] I’ve said it before but I think exercise and weight training is the ultimate route towards inner peace and wellbeing, because the process is so personal. There is no-one else in there. It’s right up there with yoga and meditation – it’s the most personal experience you can have.

Asked how he stays motivated without treat food:

Sometimes, no; but for me, I break it down into three stages: Firstly, I have to look at the goal. If my goal is getting in shape for a film then that’s my first focus. [...] Secondly, is something I call ‘the mid-moment’. It’s saying, however much I crave something, when I imagine myself eating it is it worth the disappointment of knowing I’ve given in… even, is it worth the extra time I will need to spend to burn that excess back off. [...] You’ll find that with practice you can talk yourself out of most temptations.
