RSNG Coffee No. 01, The Foundation: a dark matt pouch with an ember number and a tasting line.
RSNG Coffee · No. 01

The first cup is the quiet one.

A washed Colombian for the hour before the day gets its hands on you.

Red apple, panela, a long clean finish. Roasted in the UK to order and posted through the letterbox, so it is on the counter when you come down. Grind it while the kettle runs. Drink it before the phone.

Inside every bag there is a card. One of the twenty-two laws, printed on thick stock, yours to keep or pass on. The coffee is the point. The card is the gift.

250 g · Huila, Colombia · Washed · Whole bean or ground

Twenty-two patterns, found in the lives of people who had to earn their ground. Read them slowly. Come back to one.

A man does not rise in one heroic moment. He rises by returning to the work after comfort, failure, resentment, fear, and distraction have all invited him to stop.

One slow, painful brick at a time.

    The Foundation

Washed Colombian. Red apple, panela, a long clean finish.

The first coffee in the range. A clean washed lot from Huila, roasted light to medium for clarity rather than weight, so it is as good black at six in the morning as it is with milk at ten. Roasted in the UK the week it ships, posted flat through the letterbox.

    Jon Gupta · Mountaineer

Big lungs, strong legs, and the memory of doing it before.

Jon Gupta ran up Kilimanjaro's steepest route in a little over eight hours. His prescription for anyone heading into the big mountains is simple, and so is the lesson of one bad cramp.

Asked how he trains to move fast above five thousand metres:

The simple message I give to my clients joining my expeditions is: “Big lungs and strong legs.” On top of this a huge part of high-altitude mountaineering and doing really big days out is having the mental strength to keep on pushing. I try and encourage people to make sure they enjoy the training they do and perhaps just increase the level of training they already do, whether this is running, cycling/ spin or Crossfit.

Asked how much food and water matter:

I recently had an interesting experience related to this. After Kilimanjaro I ran the Welsh 3000’s (55km, 4500m+/-) in just under eight hours and suffered a full body cramp towards the end. It was quite scary and took 10 minutes to pass! [...] Just 10 days later I ran The Bob Graham Round (106km, 9000m+/-) in 22 hours 28 minutes and it could not have gone better. [...] The only difference in the two days: nutrition.

Asked what surprises him about mountain fitness:

I’m often surprised at just how far I can push my body at a high level in a serious environment and it just continues to perform. Hours and hours into a huge day the psychological benefits of experiences and previous big days out play a huge part in keeping you going, knowing that you have done it before, and you can do it again.
