RSNG Coffee No. 01, The Foundation: a dark matt pouch with an ember number and a tasting line.
RSNG Coffee · No. 01

The first cup is the quiet one.

A washed Colombian for the hour before the day gets its hands on you.

Red apple, panela, a long clean finish. Roasted in the UK to order and posted through the letterbox, so it is on the counter when you come down. Grind it while the kettle runs. Drink it before the phone.

Inside every bag there is a card. One of the twenty-two laws, printed on thick stock, yours to keep or pass on. The coffee is the point. The card is the gift.

250 g · Huila, Colombia · Washed · Whole bean or ground

    The 22 Laws
    of Growth & Freedom

Twenty-two patterns, found in the lives of people who had to earn their ground. Read them slowly. Come back to one.

A man does not rise in one heroic moment. He rises by returning to the work after comfort, failure, resentment, fear, and distraction have all invited him to stop.

One slow, painful brick at a time.

    The Foundation

Washed Colombian. Red apple, panela, a long clean finish.

The first coffee in the range. A clean washed lot from Huila, roasted light to medium for clarity rather than weight, so it is as good black at six in the morning as it is with milk at ten. Roasted in the UK the week it ships, posted flat through the letterbox.

    A card in every bag

Thick uncoated card, one colour, one of the twenty-two laws on the front and the whole of it on the back. It comes stapled to the back of the bag and tears off clean. Keep it on the fridge. Give it to someone who needs it.

    Patrick Cantlay · Golfer

Relearning golf from scratch after a broken back.

Fifty-four weeks as the world’s top amateur, then a fractured spine, two lost seasons and a best friend killed in front of him. He came back.

Asked how the back injury affected him:

I was swinging a club warming up for a tournament and broke my pars bone. That’s a spinal fracture and it kept me out for that time. The way that affected me was not just physical, but also mental. Everything I was doing had me thinking that I was never going to be able to do anything right on the golf course again – I was full of doubt. I was missing the putts and approach shots that I was making before the injury and I began to second-guess myself, which was very frustrating under the circumstances. [...]

Asked what the long way back was like:

[...] When the order is to rest, your emotion is to do anything but that, and I really had to hold myself back from doing anything that would potentially reignite the injury. I knew I could do even more damage unless I followed orders, but when your job is a sportsman, you are effectively denying your very purpose.

Asked whether anything good came of it:

[...] Would I have rathered the injury hadn’t happened? Of course. But coming through it made me realise how lucky I was to be doing this, and has certainly focused my mind in terms of going after everything now and never coasting through challenges, as I might have done in the past. [...]
