RSNG Coffee No. 01, The Foundation: a dark matt pouch with an ember number and a tasting line.
RSNG Coffee · No. 01

The first cup is the quiet one.

A washed Colombian for the hour before the day gets its hands on you.

Red apple, panela, a long clean finish. Roasted in the UK to order and posted through the letterbox, so it is on the counter when you come down. Grind it while the kettle runs. Drink it before the phone.

Inside every bag there is a card. One of the twenty-two laws, printed on thick stock, yours to keep or pass on. The coffee is the point. The card is the gift.

250 g · Huila, Colombia · Washed · Whole bean or ground

    of Growth & Freedom

Twenty-two patterns, found in the lives of people who had to earn their ground. Read them slowly. Come back to one.

A man does not rise in one heroic moment. He rises by returning to the work after comfort, failure, resentment, fear, and distraction have all invited him to stop.

One slow, painful brick at a time.

    The Foundation

Washed Colombian. Red apple, panela, a long clean finish.

The first coffee in the range. A clean washed lot from Huila, roasted light to medium for clarity rather than weight, so it is as good black at six in the morning as it is with milk at ten. Roasted in the UK the week it ships, posted flat through the letterbox.

    A card in every bag

Thick uncoated card, one colour, one of the twenty-two laws on the front and the whole of it on the back. It comes stapled to the back of the bag and tears off clean. Keep it on the fridge. Give it to someone who needs it.

    Rob Bigwood · Arm wrestler

One look at the piglets, and his principles set the menu.

Rob Bigwood is a champion arm wrestler who holds down a full-time job as a design director. He gave up animal products long ago, and he still wins.

Asked what made him go vegan:

Ironically it was at an arm-wrestling tournament back in 2002 – the Pennsylvania State Fair. I noticed an adorable family of piglets playing with each other and milking their mom, it was no different than watching puppies. I got sick to my stomach thinking of what I had for breakfast that morning. I've always been an animal lover at heart but that was when I made the actual connection. I then researched some documentaries and discovered how inhumane factory farming is, my life has changed ever since. It was a trial and error experience for me, first becoming vegetarian then eventually vegan.

Asked how he developed his technique:

I grew up in South Jersey and trained with a great group of guys there for years. I learned so much during our weekly practices, especially from constantly losing. You figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are and train around them. I'm not tall for my weight class so I developed a technique where I hook my opponent in towards me using my wrist and back.

Asked about the mind games at the table:

You can see it in an opponent’s eyes, right before gripping up, that they know they are about to lose. You can also physically feel it in their grip and setup. I personally don't play mind games or focus on my opponent like others might, but more on the hours I dedicated for that tournament. If I lose it only means the other guy was hungrier, trained harder, and wanted the win more.
